India’s new Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with New Zealand, set to take effect on October 20, promises significant economic impacts by permitting duty-free access for 100% of Indian exports to New Zealand. This development is expected to bolster India’s export market, providing a substantial boost to various industries by eliminating tariffs and reducing trade barriers.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the agreement, originally signed in April, also includes a strategic commitment from New Zealand to facilitate $20 billion in investments into India over the next 15 years. The anticipated influx of investment is poised to enhance economic collaboration between the two nations, fostering growth in sectors beyond traditional trade.
Despite the comprehensive nature of the agreement, India has strategically excluded sensitive agricultural products such as onions, chickpeas, peas, corn, almonds, and sugar to protect its domestic agricultural sectors. This move highlights India’s careful balancing act between expanding international trade opportunities and safeguarding local interests.
In addition to the agreement with New Zealand, India is aggressively pursuing trade negotiations with other key global partners. Talks with the European Union, Canada, and Chile are advancing, with the India-Canada negotiations entering their fifth round this October. Both nations are eager to expedite the progress of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement to further enhance bilateral ties.
Meanwhile, discussions with Chile are progressing, and India anticipates significant advancements in its trade relationship with the European Union by the end of the year. These efforts underscore India’s broader strategy to strengthen its global trade network and economic partnerships, aiming to secure a more integrated role in the international marketplace.
