Delhi has reported a total of 2,392 influenza-A cases so far this year, with 1,777 being attributed to the H1N1 strain. In response to this situation, Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Singh convened a meeting on Monday with municipal health officers and officials from government hospitals to assess and address the growing number of cases.
During the meeting, Minister Singh instructed health officials and medical facilities to enhance their efforts in screening, reporting, and closely monitoring cases of influenza-like illnesses and severe respiratory infections. Hospitals have been directed to adhere strictly to established protocols for treatment, patient care, and home care. Meanwhile, healthcare workers are being trained to better identify symptoms and effectively monitor patients who may be affected.
Assuring the public, Singh emphasized that there is no reason for alarm, noting that Delhi is well-equipped with sufficient hospital beds, medical professionals, medications, and essential medical supplies. He advised residents to practice good respiratory and hand hygiene, use masks in crowded settings, avoid close contact with individuals showing respiratory symptoms, and seek professional medical advice rather than opting for self-medication.
Despite the upward trend in H1N1 cases, the current numbers have not yet surpassed those of previous major outbreak years in Delhi, when cases exceeded 3,000. Health officials are maintaining vigilance by closely monitoring the situation, and hospitals have ramped up their preparedness to handle any potential surge.
Medical experts have pointed out several factors contributing to the increase in cases, including seasonal changes, the limited uptake of influenza vaccinations, and heightened testing for patients with flu-like symptoms. The health department’s proactive measures aim to contain the spread and ensure public safety.
