Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled the strategic framework for ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat 2029’ on Sunday, aiming to obstruct the flow of narcotics across India’s borders. This comprehensive plan zeroes in on reducing drug supply, curbing demand, and minimizing the harm associated with drug use. Shah emphasized the government’s vigorous national campaign, initiated in 2019, to dismantle drug networks operating across the country.
Key measures highlighted by Shah include the establishment of the four-tier NCORD mechanism, the formation of Anti-Narcotics Task Forces in every state and Union Territory, and the launch of a national rehabilitation helpline. Additionally, the government has developed the NIDAN database to track narcotics offenders and utilizes data-driven strategies to map drug networks and identify hotspots.
Enforcement agencies have made significant strides in seizing large quantities of drugs. From 2020 to July 2026, they confiscated over 29,968 kg of synthetic drugs, valued at more than ₹19,600 crore. Cumulatively, between 2019 and July 2026, the total seizures of narcotic and psychotropic substances have surpassed 93.34 lakh kg, marking a substantial effort in the fight against drug trafficking.
Moreover, authorities have targeted the financial underpinnings of the drug trade, seizing assets worth ₹1,841 crore in 3,016 cases from 2024 to June 2026. This approach not only focuses on the drugs themselves but also aims to dismantle the economic networks that support such activities.
During his visit to Goa, Shah reviewed the state’s security measures but had to cut his trip short and return to Delhi. The visit underscored the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing national security and tackling the challenges posed by narcotics trafficking.
