Delhi to Launch “Namo Yamuna” Ferry Service Before Chhath Puja

Delhi is set to introduce a new ferry service on the Yamuna River in preparation for the upcoming Chhath Puja celebrations. Announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the service, named “Namo Yamuna,” is scheduled to commence just before the festival, which runs from November 13 to 16.

During a recent visit to Sonia Vihar Sports Club and Sur Ghat, where Chhath Puja festivities will be held, Gupta assessed the ferry facilities. The government is also enhancing the area as a family-friendly destination, promoting it as a site where visitors can enjoy riverside activities and offer prayers.

The ferry, identified as Island Boats 40 (IB 40), is designed by Mumbai-based Inspiration Marine Pvt Ltd and features a catamaran-style hull to ensure stability on shallower parts of the river. It will operate on a five-kilometre stretch between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, offering passengers scenic views of the riverbanks and ghats. Tickets for the one-hour cruise are expected to be priced around ₹500 per person.

Initially planned for a February launch, the service was delayed due to incomplete project work. The infrastructure supporting the ferry includes jetties equipped with boarding facilities, ticket counters, and waiting areas, ensuring a smooth experience for passengers.

This initiative is part of Delhi’s broader effort to enhance the Yamuna River’s appeal and utility, making it an attractive recreational spot for both residents and visitors during the festive season and beyond.
