Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a series of rallies by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) across Assam from October 13 to October 31. These events are intended to counter what Sarma describes as Congress’s attempts to undermine democratic institutions. The rallies will take place at district headquarters throughout the state.
In a statement to reporters in Guwahati, Sarma outlined the purpose of the rallies, which he claims will express support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and bolster public confidence in constitutional institutions. He accused Congress and other opposition parties of politically motivated challenges against bodies such as the Election Commission and the Supreme Court.
The Assam Chief Minister also criticized Congress’s stance on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He argued that this process is crucial for addressing concerns related to voter lists and illegal immigration in the state. According to Sarma, the opposition’s resistance to the SIR reflects an attempt to create political pressure on constitutional institutions.
Sarma took particular aim at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of inconsistency in his responses to election results, depending on the winning party. Additionally, he condemned Gandhi’s actions regarding the Supreme Court, asserting that constitutional institutions should remain free from political influence.
The BJP’s planned rallies are positioned as a response to Congress’s approach to electoral and constitutional matters, amidst ongoing political tensions between the two parties. These tensions revolve around electoral processes, institutional independence, and immigration-related issues in Assam.
