In a significant diplomatic engagement, India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing, emphasizing the crucial need for peace and tranquillity along the border to foster the continuing development of bilateral relations. This meeting marked the 25th round of discussions between the two nations’ special representatives, focusing on their protracted boundary dispute. The primary agenda included advancing boundary delimitation, enhancing border management, and widening cooperation across the frontier.
Both countries positively assessed the progress in their bilateral relations and deliberated on ways to maintain stability along the Line of Actual Control. They reaffirmed their dedication to achieving a political resolution to the boundary issue, guided by their long-term interests. This dialogue follows the progress stemming from a 2024 understanding between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping aimed at easing tensions in the Ladakh sector. Since that agreement, there have been notable advancements such as the resumption of people-to-people exchanges, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and the reopening of border trade through designated routes.
Doval highlighted that bilateral ties have been gradually normalizing, linking this improvement directly to the maintenance of peace along the border. Conversely, China has expressed that the boundary issue should be contextualized appropriately within the broader relationship framework. Despite the discussions, both sides did not disclose significant details regarding the demarcation of the disputed boundary, although they agreed to continue negotiations and plan the next round of talks in India in 2027.
This dialogue gains importance as it precedes the anticipated visit of Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit in September, emphasizing the efforts to further stabilize bilateral relations. The commitment to ongoing negotiations underscores the mutual interest in maintaining and enhancing the diplomatic relationship, even as complex issues like boundary demarcation remain unresolved.
