Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia, a move anticipated to enhance the strategic, economic, and maritime ties between India and one of its key Indo-Pacific partners. Both nations, being the largest democracies in the Indo-Pacific and members of the G20, are looking to broaden collaboration in various sectors such as trade, technology, digital governance, healthcare, defense, and maritime security. This upcoming visit follows the trip made by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to India in January 2025, where the two countries celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations and signed agreements related to health, digital cooperation, maritime security, and cultural exchanges.
Despite their strong historical connections and mutual interests, the current bilateral trade between India and Indonesia stands at around $30 billion, with both sides aiming to tap into greater economic opportunities. India is particularly keen on increasing its investments in Indonesia, focusing on critical minerals, manufacturing, renewable energy, and food security sectors. The visit is expected to address these economic aspects, seeking to unlock the full potential of their partnership.
Digital cooperation is poised to be a central theme, with Indonesia expressing interest in India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and digital commerce initiatives. Both countries are exploring joint ventures in artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity, digital payments, and support mechanisms for small businesses. This focus on digital collaboration aims to strengthen ties and foster innovation and growth in both nations.
Furthermore, maritime security remains a top priority, with plans to bolster cooperation in the strategically significant Strait of Malacca, enhance naval collaborations, and improve maritime domain awareness. As Indonesia looks to diversify its defense suppliers, new opportunities may arise for India’s defense sector, potentially leading to expanded defense-industrial partnerships between the two countries.
The visit is also expected to foster greater people-to-people ties through enhanced academic, business, and cultural partnerships, laying the foundation for a more comprehensive and enduring relationship. This approach aims to deepen mutual understanding and cooperation, promoting long-term engagement between India and Indonesia.
