To create a username, users will generate a distinctive handle within the app. If the desired username is unavailable, WhatsApp will provide alternative suggestions through an integrated generator. Importantly, there will be no public directory of usernames, ensuring that only individuals who know the exact username can make contact. This design choice enhances user privacy by preventing random searches.
Users eager to reserve a username can do so by updating their app and navigating to: Settings → Account → Username. Notifications will alert users when the feature becomes available in their specific region. Given that WhatsApp boasts billions of users, securing a popular username may be competitive, prompting the app to roll out reservations in advance.
In addition to usernames, WhatsApp is offering an optional “username key” for extra privacy. This key serves as a secondary security layer, allowing users to control who can initiate conversations with them by sharing the key selectively.
