Indian Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju recently traveled to Doha to offer condolences on the passing of Qatar’s Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. The visit highlighted the deep-rooted ties between India and Qatar, as Rijiju met with Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to express sympathies on behalf of the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Rijiju paid tribute to the late Father Amir, characterizing him as a visionary leader who significantly contributed to Qatar’s development and the enhancement of its strategic partnership with India. He emphasized the profound impact Sheikh Hamad had on both countries, noting that the Indian community in Qatar deeply mourns his demise and holds his contributions in high regard.
Previously, Prime Minister Modi had also acknowledged Sheikh Hamad’s vital role in strengthening India-Qatar relations, referring to him as a genuine friend of India. This sentiment was echoed across the Indian government, underscoring the Father Amir’s influence on bilateral relations.
As a gesture of respect, India observed a national day of mourning on July 13, 2026. On this day, the national flag was flown at half-mast on government buildings, and all official entertainment activities were suspended, reflecting the gravity of the loss and the respect India holds for the Father Amir.
The visit by Minister Rijiju underscores the importance of the diplomatic relationship between India and Qatar, reaffirming the mutual commitment to maintaining and strengthening their longstanding partnership. The gesture of condolence illustrates the shared respect and collaboration that have come to define the bilateral ties between the two nations.
