India is actively engaging with U.S. officials to address issues stemming from the recent changes in American visa regulations that may impact Indian students and academic visitors. During a media briefing on Friday, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s External Affairs Ministry, emphasized that the Indian government is vigilantly tracking these developments. He reassured that New Delhi will consistently address any challenges faced by Indian nationals with U.S. authorities.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has implemented more stringent residency requirements for holders of F, J, and I category visas. These visas are typically issued to international students, exchange visitors, and media personnel. The revised policy introduces fixed periods of stay for non-immigrant visa holders in these categories, moving away from the previous system that permitted extended stays without continuous federal supervision.
A significant change under the new regulations affects F visa holders, who will now have a reduced grace period of 30 days after completing their studies. This is a decrease from the earlier allowance of 60 days, within which they must either depart the United States, enroll in another institution, or alter their immigration status.
Indian authorities have acknowledged that visa and immigration policies are matters of national sovereignty. However, they have reiterated their dedication to supporting Indian citizens abroad and mitigating any adverse impacts resulting from these updated visa rules.
