US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has embarked on a four-day visit to India beginning Saturday, with the primary goal of enhancing strategic partnerships and broadening collaboration across various sectors such as trade, defense, energy, and technology. The visit underscores the growing importance of US-India relations amidst shifting global dynamics.
Rubio’s itinerary includes bilateral discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Notably, his visit aligns with the upcoming Quadrilateral Security Dialogue involving foreign ministers from India, the United States, Japan, and Australia, signaling a continued focus on Indo-Pacific stability. Key areas of discussion are anticipated to include regional security, defense collaboration, advancements in critical technologies, and strengthening supply chains in the face of China’s expanding influence.
The agenda also emphasizes resolving trade tensions that emerged following former President Donald Trump’s tariff policies impacting Indian exports. Both nations are expected to deliberate on enhancing economic ties and mitigating trade disputes, aiming for a more robust economic partnership.
Energy security stands out as another focal point, with the United States eager to increase its crude oil and LNG exports to India. This comes as India continues to navigate its energy procurement strategy, which includes purchasing discounted oil from Russia. These discussions are set to play a crucial role in shaping future energy cooperation between the two countries.
Defense remains a cornerstone of US-India relations, as evidenced by India’s operation of several American defense systems, such as the Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft, MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones, M777 howitzers, and C-17 Globemaster III transports. Talks will likely cover joint production and collaboration in advanced defense and space technologies. During his stay, Rubio will visit several Indian cities, including Kolkata, Agra, and Jaipur, along with New Delhi. In Kolkata, he plans to visit the Missionaries of Charity headquarters, founded by Mother Teresa, further highlighting the multifaceted nature of his trip.
