India is advancing its plans to procure an additional five S-400 Triumf air defense systems from Russia. Moscow has already submitted a cost proposal, paving the way for negotiations with New Delhi. The final decision will rest with the Cabinet Committee on Security, contingent upon reaching a price agreement and obtaining clearance from the Finance Ministry. This move follows the existing contract established in 2018 for five S-400 systems, valued at $5.43 billion, with the final delivery anticipated by November 2026.
The acquisition of these additional systems aims to bolster India’s air defense capabilities, particularly along the strategically sensitive eastern sector adjacent to China. The S-400 systems have already proven their worth, most notably during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, substantiating India’s interest in expanding its fleet.
While discussions regarding the S-400 systems continue, India remains undecided about acquiring Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft. Despite the Indian Air Force’s interest in the Russian offer, especially in light of China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet, a final decision has yet to be made.
The potential acquisition of more S-400 systems will likely be a focal point in broader defense talks between India and Russia. This topic is expected to gain further attention with the upcoming visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India for the BRICS summit scheduled for September.
