India and Denmark are set to expand their strategic partnership, with a focus on renewable energy, sustainable shipping, and bilateral trade. This initiative was highlighted during Denmark’s Business Minister Martin Lidegaard’s visit to Mumbai and New Delhi from November 2 to 3, where he met with Indian government officials and business leaders to explore economic cooperation opportunities.

The two nations are preparing to advance their Green Strategic Partnership, originally established in 2020, by developing a new joint action plan that targets areas of mutual economic and environmental interest. Lidegaard emphasized India’s growing role as a strategic and commercial partner and Denmark’s commitment to supporting India’s green transition.

In Mumbai, Lidegaard visited APM Terminals, a part of the Danish shipping group Maersk, and discussed investment opportunities with Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma. The focus was on leveraging Danish expertise in sustainable maritime development, with discussions in New Delhi with Union Ports and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on environmentally friendly shipping and modern port infrastructure.

Cooperation in renewable energy emerged as a significant priority. Discussions with Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi centered on enhancing energy efficiency, clean energy infrastructure, and supporting India’s shift toward a sustainable power system. Denmark’s involvement in the International Solar Alliance underlines its commitment to wider cooperation in renewable energy.

Bilateral trade was another key agenda item, with talks with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal aimed at expanding trade, improving business opportunities, and fostering economic relations, especially in light of the proposed India-European Union free trade agreement. Currently, over 200 Danish companies operate in India, providing employment to more than 100,000 people across various sectors.

Overall, the strengthened partnership between India and Denmark is expected to open new avenues for investment, technological exchange, and sustainable development, thereby deepening economic ties between the two countries.
