Malaysia is poised to send a team of DNA experts to Nepal to assist in identifying the victims of recent catastrophic floods and landslides. Discussions are underway for the necessary approval from Nepalese authorities, according to Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan. The deployment of these specialists is intended to commence DNA identification efforts once the ongoing search and rescue operations conclude. The process will involve matching DNA from recovered bodies with samples obtained from families of missing Malaysian citizens.
The urgency of this mission is underscored by the fact that Malaysia has already gathered DNA samples from the relatives of 55 Malaysians who remain unaccounted for after the disasters. Many of the bodies retrieved were interred swiftly due to constraints in available facilities, highlighting the critical role of DNA testing in confirming identities.
In preparation for the mission, Malaysia has assembled a team comprising 11 personnel, equipped with 12.4 tonnes of rescue apparatus. This includes detection instruments, communication technology, high-capacity drones, and specialized equipment for tunnel rescues. Additionally, the team has brought along a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to aid in their efforts.
The Malaysian government is hopeful that the integration of search, rescue, and DNA identification strategies will be instrumental in locating missing individuals and providing closure to the families awaiting news of their loved ones.
