During recent discussions in Ottawa, Mark Carney hailed a potential free trade agreement with India as a transformative opportunity. In talks with India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, the focus was on advancing the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with optimism from both parties about finalizing the deal by the end of the year. Carney emphasized that the agreement could significantly benefit Canadian workers and businesses, particularly in the energy, agriculture, technology, and education sectors.
Piyush Goyal, who extended greetings from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighted the discussions aimed at enhancing long-term bilateral cooperation and expediting trade negotiations. Canada’s International Trade Minister, Maninder Sidhu, was also part of the talks, underscoring the commitment from both nations. They confirmed that two rounds of negotiations have been completed, with Canada preparing to host the upcoming round.
Accompanying Goyal on his visit to Canada is a substantial business delegation from India, comprising over 100 representatives engaging in trade and investment discussions in Toronto. This initiative underscores the dedication to fostering deeper economic ties between the two countries.
In addition to meeting with Carney, Goyal also conferred with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald. These meetings aimed at broadening cooperation across multiple sectors, reflecting a renewed vigor in diplomatic relations between India and Canada.
This positive momentum signifies a notable improvement in India-Canada relations, which had been strained in 2023 following accusations concerning the death of Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, allegations that India had firmly denied. Relations have improved since Carney assumed office in 2025, facilitating renewed diplomatic engagement and the revival of CEPA negotiations.
