The West Bengal government has initiated a significant move by allocating financial assistance of ₹5 lakh each to 60 Rath Yatra committees across the state. This funding is aimed at aiding the restoration and upkeep of historic chariots, marking a historic first in direct state support for Rath Yatra festivities. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari emphasized the urgency of renovating these traditional wooden chariots, many of which are centuries old, and encouraged committees to utilize the funds for preservation efforts.

In an effort to elevate the spiritual experience, the state has arranged for helicopters to shower flower petals on participants of the 30-km Shravan Yatra in Tarakeshwar, located in the Hooghly district. This gesture is part of a broader initiative to enhance the pilgrimage experience, with Seva Kendras being set up at 75 fair locations to offer essential services such as medical aid, police assistance, and drinking water to pilgrims.

The government’s support doesn’t stop at the immediate funding. Plans are underway to extend financial assistance to additional Rath Yatra committees in the future, reflecting a vision to preserve cultural heritage and promote communal celebrations. This initiative not only supports the maintenance of historic chariots but also emphasizes the importance of cultural preservation and community engagement.

In a broader cultural development agenda, the state has committed to investing ₹1,000 crore over the next three years to develop the Bengal Shaktipeeth Circuit. This project is poised to boost religious tourism by promoting pilgrimage routes and restoring historic temples, thereby enhancing the cultural and spiritual landscape of the region.
