The Shiv Sena (UBT) is experiencing an escalating internal crisis following the defection of two Lok Sabha MPs, Nagesh Patil Ashtikar and Omprakash Raje Nimbalkar, to the faction led by Eknath Shinde. This recent shift bolsters the insurgency within Uddhav Thackeray’s party, as the number of MPs siding with the dissident group has now risen to six. Ashtikar explained that his decision stemmed from the absence of development funds for his constituency and mounting frustration over derogatory remarks aimed at rebel MPs. He clarified that his allegiance to Shiv Sena’s ideology remains intact, emphasizing that his move was a factional shift intended to enhance service to his constituents.
Nimbalkar, having also confirmed his transition, mentioned that he would continue to engage with his supporters before finalizing his political plans. He made it clear that, despite the political turmoil, he would refrain from speaking against Uddhav Thackeray or Aaditya Thackeray. This stance highlights a complex dynamic, as he navigates his new alignment while maintaining respect for key figures in the party from which he departed.
In response to these developments, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut claimed that certain rebel MPs remain in contact with the party, expressing worries about potential backlash from their constituencies. Raut indicated that the party is open to dialogue with those contemplating a return, suggesting a possible pathway to reconciliation amid the ongoing discord.
To address the situation, the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction has initiated disciplinary measures against the six defecting MPs. They have issued fresh show-cause notices and warned of possible action under the anti-defection law if the MPs do not respond. Additionally, party leaders are considering approaching the Lok Sabha Speaker to seek their disqualification, underscoring the severity of the internal rift.
The rebellion has escalated political tensions in Maharashtra, with accusations flying between both sides. Meanwhile, the BJP has denied any involvement in encouraging these defections, further complicating the political landscape. As the situation unfolds, the Shiv Sena (UBT) faces a critical juncture in navigating its internal challenges and preserving its political integrity.
