The European Union has underscored the significance of its strategic partnership with India, emphasizing enhanced collaboration in trade, technology, security, and connectivity. Both parties are focused on finalizing a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by year’s end, which is set to bolster their economic and strategic ties further.
As Ireland assumes its presidency of the Council of the European Union, Irish Ambassador Kevin Kelly highlighted that the EU’s relationship with India transcends trade. It now encompasses technology, research, climate action, maritime security, resilient supply chains, and digital cooperation. Kelly emphasized that the strengthening of these ties is crucial for addressing shared global challenges and fostering sustainable economic growth.
Negotiations for the India-EU Free Trade Agreement have concluded, and the agreement is anticipated to be formally signed by December, potentially coming into effect early next year. Beyond trade, both sides have deepened their cooperation in critical fields such as defense, security, and emerging technologies, navigating the evolving global economic and geopolitical landscape.
EU Ambassador Herve Delphin highlighted the adaptive strategies of Europe and India, as they pursue greater strategic autonomy while maintaining robust partnerships. He underscored the need for protecting freedom of navigation and ensuring secure global trade routes. Delphin called for enhanced India-EU collaboration on maritime security and regional stability, reflecting the shifting global dynamics.
