India clinched the Asian Games men’s cricket gold medal with a thrilling 19-run victory over Pakistan at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan. The match saw India defend their title successfully, extending their dominance in T20 internationals over their arch-rivals.
Batting first, India set a formidable total of 211/6, thanks to a strong start by Abhishek Sharma and a late surge by Tilak Varma. Abhishek’s rapid half-century propelled India to 81/2 during the Powerplay, marking their highest Powerplay score against Pakistan in T20Is. Despite a middle-order fightback by Pakistan’s bowlers Arafat Minhas, Ahmed Daniyal, and Abrar Ahmed, who picked up key wickets to slow India’s momentum, Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 51 off 22 balls, in partnership with Shivam Dube, helped India cross the 200-run mark.
Pakistan began their chase with determination, led by Hasan Nawaz, who scored an impressive unbeaten 96 from 51 balls. His partnership with Saim Ayub reached 87 runs, putting significant pressure on the Indian bowling attack. However, India regained control in the crucial final overs. Washington Sundar delivered a pivotal 18th over, and Jasprit Bumrah tightened the screws in the penultimate over, leaving Pakistan needing 33 runs from the final six balls.
Shivam Dube successfully defended the last over, securing a 19-run victory for India and another gold medal in the Asian Games. This victory reinforces India’s position at the top of Asian cricket, showcasing their strength in high-pressure matches against traditional rivals like Pakistan.
